How Does Dry Needling Work?

Unlike acupuncture, which is based on traditional Chinese medicine, dry needling is grounded in modern neuroscience and musculoskeletal anatomy. When a needle is inserted into a trigger point, it creates a local twitch response that releases muscle tension, improves blood flow, and reduces pain signals. Many patients experience immediate relief after a single session.

Conditions Treated with Dry Needling

Dry needling is effective for chronic neck and back pain, tension headaches and migraines, shoulder impingement and rotator cuff pain, tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow, hip and IT band tightness, plantar fasciitis, TMJ dysfunction, and post-surgical muscle guarding. It is typically used in combination with other physical therapy techniques for maximum results.

What to Expect

A dry needling session lasts 15 to 30 minutes as part of your overall therapy visit. You may feel a brief twitch or deep ache when the needle engages a trigger point — this is a positive sign that the treatment is working. Mild soreness for 24 to 48 hours afterward is normal. Most patients notice improved range of motion and pain reduction within 2 to 3 sessions.
